The Esterhazy Singers is an amateur choir that aims at professional standards. Based in the City of London, the choir is named after Haydn’s patrons, the Princes Nicholas and Paul Anton Esterhazy. The music of Haydn is central to the choir’s repertoire but it also tackles a wide range of styles, from Renaissance polyphony to ambitious contemporary choral music.

Rehearsals are held on Tuesday evenings 7-9.30pm in term time at St Magnus the Martyr, Lower Thames Street EC3R 6DN.

The Esterhazy Singers will be combining with period instrument ensemble The Little Baroque Company to present Haydn’s The Seasons at this exciting venue with outstanding young soloists Mary Bevan (soprano), Greg Tassell (tenor) and Marcus Farnsworth (baritone).

The concert is a rare opportunity to hear a performance in English of Haydn’s last oratorio, a musical journey beginning in spring with an idyllic pastoral scene, moving on to a dramatic summer storm, a joyous drinking song at harvest time and the thrill of the hunt in the autumn, ending in the chill of winter as the traveller contemplates the mortality of man.

In 2008 we are offering sponsorship packages.

Small Business option:
Aimed at networking SMEs and sole traders (accountants / solicitors) who could find it useful to frequently entertain clients at concert & wine evenings. This will include concert tickets throughout the year, priority seating, interval queue-jumping, and your business advertised in the concert guides.

Corporate option:
We are offering one exclusive Corporate sponsorship package suitable for a larger business. This package will additionally include an in-house concert, or carol service, for the sponsor. This package could also feature a stall presence at concert intervals, to help you easily reach our large, highly cultured, professional audience.

Choir membership

The choir welcomes new members in all voice parts. We are a friendly and sociable group who aim for a balanced membership of about 50 singers. While we are an amateur choir who love singing as a leisure activity, we rehearse and perform to high standards. Three of our concerts each year take place in London churches but we also perform summer concerts in country churches or abroad. We have performed works by Haydn, as befits the Esterhazy name, but we sing the music of many periods and composers, from ancient to contemporary. We have also sung specially commissioned works.

To join you do not have to be widely experienced, but you need a good sense of pitch, ability to read music and a willingness to commit to rehearsals and concert dates. All new singers are invited to undertake a short vocal audition before admittance to the choir and you are welcome to come along and try a couple of rehearsals before you join. Rehearsals are held on Tuesday evenings in term time from 7 pm till 9.30 pm at St Magnus the Martyr Church in Lower Thames Street EC1, close to the Monument and London Bridge.

Our Musical Director

Esther Jones has been Musical Director of the Esterhazy Singers since September 2006.
She read music at Oxford University, where she was organ scholar of University College, and studied choral conducting with Patrick Russill and Paul Brough at the Royal Academy of Music (RAM), where she won the Irene Burcher and Thomas Armstrong prizes. She is currently Open Academy Fellow at the RAM, holds a London Symphony Chorus Conducting Scholarship and is the first Stanley Vann Scholar. She is Director of the RSCM Skills of a Church Musician educational programme and Director of Music at Christ Church, Epsom Common. She conducts several youth and adult choirs in the southeast and is assistant conductor to the RSCM Millennium Youth Choir and the National Youth Choir of Great Britain. She is also in demand across the UK as a vocal animateur and workshop leader and sings with Vox Angelica vocal trio.
